About US

The Alano Club of SLO County

Our History

The Alano Club of SLO County was formed in late 1962 or early 1963. The original location was at 1814 Osos Street in San Luis Obispo. The building was referred to as the Bernard building, for the owner Earl Bernard. In 1963 The Alano Club had about 25 paying members. Around June 1970 The Alano Club members formed a group to purchase the building from Bernard. The club was purchased with an initial note of $24,000 and a second note of $12,000 which both were interest free. This proved to be a wise investment. In 1985 The Alano Club membership consisted of 200 paying members. In 2012, due to a variety of maintenance issues, the building was sold and the monies were used to build a new club located at 3075 Broad Street in SLO.

The Alano Club of SLO County is the oldest and continuously operated 12-step provider for those in and seeking recovery. We are the only facility on the Central Coast that operates three distinct recovery related missions under one roof: 1) The largest venue for daily 12-step meetings in SLO County, 2) Providing a nine-bed sober living environment, and 3) A supportive community center for those in recovery.

Our meeting room currently hosts on average four meetings per day, up to seven, by numerous 12-step groups that are primarily Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. All meetings are one hour long with exceptions to the monthly AA Birthday meeting and NA Rock Bottom speaker meeting having an extra thirty minutes. Meetings are open to anyone with exceptions for the SLO Vets group closed to veterans and the Women's Meeting.

The Alano Club of SLO County recognizes our sober living environment as the next step towards fully independent living. We accept those in recovery with six months clean/sober time as well as currently residing in traditional sober living homes. With a max stay of two years, we see ourselves as the next step essentially bridging the gap between early recovery and becoming a productive member of society. We offer group living transitional housing with single occupancy rooms, affordable rent that is all inclusive, and continually striving to expand our support to our residents.

Our community club room offers snacks and drinks, recovery merchandise, literature, and a place to fellowship before and after meetings. We offer events on major holidays, as we are always open, attempting to offer alternative celebrations for those in recovery. This social environment helps promote wellness, encourages working together, and a friendly spirit of cooperation. Building up a support system is achieved through connecting with like-minded individuals which greatly increases long term success.
